The evaluation landscape is improving day by day. The tools and thinking about what monitoring and evaluation is and what it can do is under scrutiny by the global evaluation community. More training opportunities have been opened up.A global learning organization - the International Evaluation Academy has been set up by IDEAS. It is a body for Evaluation thinkers that promotes transformative approaches to evaluation. For information, attached are the foundational documents.
The Academy will focus on transforming the evaluation field through awards in training, professionalization etc. The Academy has created a Council to support its work globally. We are excited that the International Evaluation Academy Council shall be chaired by Professor Zenda who is a past president of AFREA; The current President of AFREA was also invited to join the Council and She will keep us abreast with the awards and opportunities so that you participate actively as an M&E practitioner. The young ones who have time, you should think of improving your academic credentials in M&E.
Allow me to share with you one of the eloquent books on evaluation that could provoke thinking (attached). it brings up issues such as:
- Measures of average are not good for guiding policy and interventions intended to target a certain group of people
- Intermediate outcomes are easy to monitor but in some cases are never related to the final outcomes and may be misleading.
- Measuring immediate needs undermines focus on long term needs.
