Invitation to a Training Workshop in Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis – Using ATLAS.ti Software

This is to invite you to participate in a one and half-day training workshop intended to equip you with skills in qualitative data analysis in Evaluation using ATLAS.ti software. CAQDAS involves converting and interpreting raw data (participants’ text or audio or images) into a meaningful format (research findings or report). This workshop aims to demonstrate the how to use CAQDAS software (ATLAS.ti 8 in particular) for the purpose of making sense of qualitative data.
The objectives of the workshop include;
  1. To learn key functions of ATLAS.ti for CAQDAS
  2. To demonstrate (hands-on) how to analyze or code qualitative data.
  3. To explore how to write-up the findings of the analysis

The workshop will be held from the 27th day of June 2019 starting at 8:30Am to 5:00Pm to 28th June 2019 from 8:30Am to 12:00 noon. This will be followed by the UEA Annual General Meeting starting at 2:00Pm to 5:00Pm.

The training workshop is free for UEA paid up members. Other interested participants (including non-members) will contribute Ushs.100, 000. Participants will be required to come with a laptop computer to facilitate practical learning. Venue is Uganda Management Institute, Video Conference Hall on the distance learning center.

Trainers Experience and Qualifications

Stephen O. Wandera (PhD)

Stephen holds a PhD in Population Studies, MSc. Population and Reproductive Health, Makerere University, and a BSc. Population Studies from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.  He has undergone training in Advanced Research Training from University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa and African Population & Health Research Centre (APHRC), Nairobi, Kenya, Sexual and Reproductive Health Research, Geneva Foundation for Medical Education & Research (GFMER) and World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva, Switzerland among others.

Stephen is a licensed user of NVIVO and an expert user of ATLAS.ti. He was a co-facilitator with Joshua Byenkya during the Uganda Evaluation Week (UEW) held 11th-15th, February, 2019 at Hotel Africana in Kampala, Uganda. He was also a Researcher with Institute for Research and Development (IRD), Paris, France & Nairobi, Kenya on “Poverty, Resource Accessibility and Spatial Mobility in East Africa (M-PRAM)” were he conducted interviews with key populations including fishermen, commercial sex workers, transcribed interviews and coded them using Nvivo version 9 Qualitative. He was also a Research Specialist with JHPIEGO, Kampala, Uganda & Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Stephen was a lead consultant for a program evaluation on “Saving Lives at Birth (SLAB) in Uganda” where he collected qualitative data from midwives and nurses in health facilities in Eastern Uganda, during this evaluation, he transcribed verbatim 21 audio recordings in time, analysed 12 transcriptions using Atlas Ti version 7. In addition, he was part of a Joint Advanced Seminar (JAS) 2 Qualitative Data Analysis (QSR International Nvivo) for Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) PhD Fellows, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa where he Developed training curriculum and power point presentations for Nvivo 11 and facilitated how to code and query qualitative data.
Dr Wandera has written and published four book chapters as well as over 15 peer reviewed journal articles published with prestigious journals like The National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), Research Gate, Biomed central, among others.

Byenkya Joshua

Joshua holds a Master’s Degree and a Post Graduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation from Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU). He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business from Makerere University and currently pursuing a Masters in Research and Public Policy at Uganda Christian University (UCU). He has also trained in several professional certificates that include; project planning and management, evaluating humanitarian action, data visualization and utilisation of evaluation findings, equity focused and gender responsive evaluation, how to manage complex evaluations in real time projects and programmes, using mid-level theory for impact evaluations and systematic reviews among so many others.

Joshua is a licensed user of ATLAS.ti under the international network of trainers and consultants. See: https://atlasti.com/support/consultants/#africa. He has facilitated seven trainings in qualitative data analysis using Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS). Recently, he facilitated a workshop during the 7th Uganda Evaluation Week (UEW) where he trained delegates from Office of the President, Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Uganda Management Institute (UMI), UN Women, GIZ, MUCOBADI, American Refugee Committee (ARC), Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development, (MoFPED), Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development (MGLSD). On 30th, March, 2019 he facilitated a qualitative research and evaluation workshop on how to develop Grounded Theory (GT) using (CAQDAS) with ATLAS ti. The workshop was attended by post graduate students at various stages of writing their Masters/PhD theses from across Ugandan Universities under the Umbrella of Academic Research and Education Network Uganda, (AREN-Uganda) in Partnership with Makerere University College of Humanities. He has also conducted customized organisational trainings with Lida Africa and supported Maarifa Consult in conducting various Trainings in CAQDAS since 2016.

Joshua has written various M&E and research reports for local and international organisations with the aid of ATLAS.ti software. Including supporting Doctoral students in making sense of their qualitative data.
He is an Executive Member of the Uganda Evaluation Association (UEA), and the Vice President of Young and Emerging Evaluators Uganda (YEE-Uganda) and the Founder and Executive Director of Evaluation Partners Ltd, a consultancy firm specializing in Research, Evaluation and Organisational Capacity Development.
